So much for local democracy! He and his wife built the imposing house, now 9 Lynn Road, at the west end of the village and both are buried in the village churchyard. As time went by, the rivalry between the Howards and the Walpoles lessened and may h ave served the village well. Parliamentary elections, held roughly every four years, were often a time when no expenses were spared in the village as dignitaries from the two families came for the elections.

Many of the vernacular buildings in the village were built or renovated during the 18 th and 19 th centuries, and it appears to have been a time of stability. In this road was made into a Turnpike Road between Lynn and Dersingham, considerably improving access to the outside world. Milestone number 4 was at the west entrance to the village, but has since disappeared. The ownership of the Manor remained with different branches of the Howard family, but until the most recent branch of the family, they mostly had several more wealthy estates elsewhere and visited Castle Rising infrequently.

The estate was managed through agents and the correspondence between agents and owners has been preserved i n the Norfolk Record Office giving a fascinating glimpse of village life until the end of the 19 th Century. The village at this time had four farms, two mills and an active sand- pit.

A school was built and the nearby village of North Wootton boasted a railway station, allowing access to a much wider world. They stayed in their Mansion House in the village and were benefactors, restoring the church and the market cross. In the mid- 19 th century the royal family acquired Sandringham estate as a country retreat and it became a favourite of Bertie, the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII.

This led to an increase in the use of the Castle Rising estate for game shooting and a decrease in farming. Much of the common heathland was allowed to revert of woodland and there was an increase in game- keeping activities, which remains to this day. By the end of the 19 th century, the Manor had been transferred to yet another branch of the Howard family, Mary having died in with no close heirs.

The central feature is the large Keep, which was one of the biggest Norman fortifications, and remains decorated with ornate stonework. The structure is surrounded by extensive earthworks. The entrance passage to the Keep left and exterior elaborate decoration made a clear statement about the wealth and power of the de Albini family.

W One of the most famous 12th century castles in England, the well-preserved stone keep is amongst the finest surviving examples of its kind and is surrounded by 12 acres of earthwork defences. The massive keep was designed for strength, but the interior was luxurious. Although the roof and floors are now missing, the substantial remains of Castle Rising are imposing, and have an elegant simplicity.

It is a rare example of a hall-keep, as it is longer than it is high. Entrance was via the first floor, while the ground floor level was an undercroft for storage, much in the style of a tower-house.
