Not only did they provide physical food for the hungry, but they sought to meet the medical needs as well as spiritual needs of the people who crossed their paths. Soon after this, he felt called to enter Bible school in order to preach the gospel. Buntain brought him inside and gradually nursed him back to health. After giving him a bath, he felt even better.

Soon the boy went with the other children to attend school. For many years the Buntains pastored the Assembly of God in Calcutta, which grew to more than 1, people in Sunday School each week and 4, in church attendance. The Buntains dedicated their first school in January with children enrolled.

The Buntains wanted to extend the compassionate ministries for the poor of Calcutta, but the questions remained "where" and "how? After inquiring, he discovered it was an old British cemetery that had not been used for over years. Miraculously, the city granted us a ninety-nine year renewable lease for the nearly four square blocks of land.

First, God miraculously provided for the building of a hospital. After constructing the medical facility, they built a large school complex and nine-story office building on the property. The office building houses a medical clinic, pharmacy, nursing school, church offices, in addition to renting space to other companies to provide income for the hospital, feeding programs, and other charitable ministries.

Mark died in June of a cerebral brain hemorrhage. The media reported that over twenty thousand people attended the funeral service as well as hundreds standing on roofs of surrounding buildings and the street in front of the mission. Obeying the call of God in their lives, the missionary couple along with their one-year-old daughter came to Kolkata in They set up a tent in a vacant plot in Kolkata and started telling people about the love of Jesus.

For the sick and injured, Mark built a small clinic which later developed into a multi-specialty Hospital. He also used to preach the gospel through broadcast in Hindi, English, and Bengali. Soon he received a letter from Simpson, who had laid aside her own funds and returned to India. The doors are open! Gladys followed one year later and they married in India in Maynard and Gladys became the first Assemblies of God missionaries to the Bengali-speaking area of Eastern India, which includes Calcutta and what was then called East Bengal.

But God was not done with her vision even then. When Ketcham became the Assemblies of God field director for the Far East he saw potential in a young evangelist and invited him to come to do missions work in Calcutta. The young man had invitations elsewhere but agreed to pray about Calcutta.
