What do monarchs caterpillars eat
We brought the hanging structure into the house and tucked away the plants that had caterpillars on them.
One late evening my family of four huddled in one room with tornado alerts pinging our phones while the chrysalides hung safely in our foyer. A day or two after releasing our first monarch, we had an adult visit our milkweed. Had she returned? At this point, most of our caterpillars had pupated, so I moved several of the milkweed plants out of the hanging bower. After the lot with the missing limbs there were five chrysalides remaining. To my relief, they all emerged normally.
I watched it for 12 hours with my camera in an attempt to capture the emergence on video. This pupa was on a potted milkweed, so I was able to bring the plant inside and control the environment to get good footage. I watched and waited until p. After the butterfly emerged, I put it and the plant back in the bower to release the next day.
I wanted my girls to be a part of the culmination of this accidental five-week project. Saturday morning was beautiful. We released the monarch, a male, and wished him well on his new journey as an adult butterfly. It was bittersweet, but at least I still have a couple of caterpillars crawling on the recovering milkweed in our garden. We had 22 and released In many ways, this journey could not have been better timed. It has opened doors to conversations about science, nature, life and death with my children.
I watched them study these insects with curiosity, and witnessed their joy in interacting with and releasing these amazing butterflies. Pandemic or not, children or not, I recommend rearing butterflies at least once in your lifetime. The Florida Museum Plant Sales often have milkweed available for purchase. Visit the Plant Sale website for plant and purchasing options. Masks are recommended to be worn at all times. Along the way they sip the nectar and transfer the pollen among the tubular florets of the milkweed bloom.
Female Monarchs also seem to get some nutrients from the spermatophore after mating, but they fuel their flight with a variety of sugary liquids. Some beautiful butterflies are major composters. If you find some disgusting, moldy, rotten food at the back of the refrigerator and set it on the ground, Silver-Spotted Skippers, Red-Spotted Purples, Tiger Swallowtails, and other pretty-winged butterflies will visit you.
They appreciate watermelon rinds, overripe bananas, and citrus fruit sliced across the sections, and they may help you use up half-cans of fruit. Monarch Butterflies sip plain water. Sometimes they also choose brackish or polluted water. Flowers may not be blooming by the time butterflies who have hibernated come back to your garden. What to feed a Monarch Butterfly you have reared indoors is sugar syrup, a slice of overripe fruit, or fresh flowers raised in the same greenhouse—whichever is unsprayed.
They also like honey, but honey without pesticide residues can be hard to find. In addition to milkweed they like red clover, asters, eupatoriums boneset , thistles, and echinacea coneflowers. Monarchs visit lots of different flowers while flying about in search of milkweed.
A Monarch Butterfly garden contains a variety of other flowers that bloom before milkweed does, and several milkweed plants. It will attract many other butterflies, possibly hummingbirds, and some songbirds who may eat some of the butterflies. Though you might see a male butterfly of a smaller species guarding a flower that might attract a prospective mate, overall the different butterflies and hummingbirds help one another by pollinating the flowers.
Milkweeds, which are the sole food source for monarch caterpillars, have also experienced a decline throughout the breeding range of this butterfly.

The guidelines provide an overview of the biology and conservation of western monarchs, step-by-step guidance for developing a site-specific management plan, and overall guidance on topics including tree management, shrub and forb management, and visitor and public access issues.
The document also includes a list of monarch-attractive native nectar plants suitable for coastal areas. These guidelines will help site managers become familiar with overwintering monarch habitat needs and provides a roadmap to develop site-specific management plans to benefit monarchs in both the short- and long-term.
The new guidelines were developed through a combination of expert opinion and studies of monarch overwintering site requirements in Mexico and in California. The document benefited from the review and input of many knowledgeable biologists, including Mia Monroe who initiated and still coordinates the Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count along with the Xerces Society , Francis Villablanca a professor at Cal Poly and director of Monarch Alert , and Dan Meade who has studied overwintering monarchs for decades.
Overwintering sites are complex, dynamic habitats and the understanding of their management is constantly evolving. We anticipate updating the guidelines in the light of additional research and experience of current restoration efforts. Photo by Anne Okonek. Nectaring monarch butterfly. Photo by Mark Garland. Adult monarchs feed on the nectar from flowers, which contain sugars and other nutrients. Unlike the larvae that only eat milkweeds, adult monarchs feed on a wide variety of nectar bearing flowers.
They will visit many different kinds of flowers in their search for food. An abundance of nectar sources is especially important for migrating monarchs. Monarchs that are preparing to migrate south to Mexico need to consume enough nectar to build up fat reserves. The food they eat before and during their migration south must not only power them through the long journey, but also must sustain them throughout the winter.
The last mutation to show up in the monarch lineage is the one that confers the greatest resistance to cardenolides, based on the fruit fly results. And there may be a reason it came in last: Present on its own, it also would have had the largest seizure effect, harming the monarchs. First, a mutation of small effect would have altered the structure of the sodium pump to provide some resistance, but also some neurological problems. The second mutation would have amended the pump structure slightly, thereby fixing that problem.
By so doing, it would have prepared conditions for the third mutation—the one with the heftiest antitoxin effect. By itself, that third mutation would have created intolerable neurological issues. But with the second mutation already in place, all would be well, or at least much better. Hopi Hoekstra, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard University, calls this one of her favorite studies in a long time.
Not only did resistance to the toxin open up a whole new source of food, but it also allowed the butterflies to repel predators by storing the toxins in their bodies. Birds tend to find out the hard way which insects are unpalatable, by trial and error. But many toxic insects—monarchs among them—have evolved a similar palette of warning colors, so that fewer of them must be eaten to teach the birds a lesson. These toxins changed everything.
