Why is 3ds max so expensive
The real trick is to work for a company that would buy the licenses for you ;. I can understand you question in the light of the other companies dropping their prices. I do think Discreet will eventually have to follow suite.
They do have a huge user base that will be hard pressed to change their pipeline, but I would not rely on that to stay permanent. It is quite funny when you look at the history of Max.
But as time has gone on, and when Autodesk bought Discreet and aligned Max with the flame side of the business, Max has moved up in the perception stakes. But to answer your question, they are so expensive cause they can charge that and people will pay for it. I must say its toolset has matured well and with 7, they have finally made sure the core program has a strong CA toolset. I do think it is due for a rewrite however. My take on it this: Consider who uses 3D products, movies, games, entertainment, etc.
They are making TONS of money off the product that these programs produce. Also take into account how often studios upgrade thier software, then think about how much development costs. There are zillions of jobs advertised for 'Max skilled folks so by and large its a self fulfulling prophesy. Discreet has no reason to lower the price until the majority of their sales start being down to licence renewals only, i.
I think the advice above is solid. This page has been translated for your convenience with an automatic translation service. You can check out Blender Cookie for character modelling tutorials. Otherwise it'll become frustrating for you. They do Unity game engine tuts as well. But I intend to make money later on and don't want my work to be in vain so this is why I would use blender just to be on the safe side you know. BrandyStarbrite likes this.
All official blender institute own DVDs are creative commons. BrainMelter If you don't like the right mouse button clicking commands, in Blender There is an option in preferences, where you could reverse all mouse click selection commands, to the left mouse button. And there is also another option where you can switch the interface commands, to make it mimic, or make the commands similar to Maya.
I never used the Maya option , because I grew accustomed to the default Right clicking. It's got its place, definitely But there is something to be said for commercial software. My beef with 3DSMax is its price. I found blender very clumsy when I tried it. It was bad enough I didnt even want to give it a decent shot at proving it was worth the effort. Things as simple as how it rotated around the object you were working on felt inadequate Gimp is another example. Being proficient in photoshop, I would prefer to use Paint.

A lot of large studios have a lot invested in the large packages. Sure, it might be free in terms of licensing to swap everyone over to Blender instead of buying even one extra Max or Maya seat at several thousand dollars, but what are the costs to the rest of the business?
Custom tools need to be re-written or replaced. Huge parts of the QA pipeline would need rework. Any documentation, policies or work instructions referring to old tools need to be updated at best, re-written at worst.
Everyone who uses the software needs re-training. Everyone who uses the software will drop in productivity for somewhere between 3 weeks and 3 months as they get familiar with the new stuff. Software will have to be uninstalled and re-installed on most if not all workstations.
This will result in days or potentially weeks of cumulative downtime. All existing data saved in the old software's formats need to be converted to the new data's formats. Everything that any of the art pipeline touched needs re-testing, and will almost certainly need maintenance work as a result. There's an ongoing cost of training new people, as well. Students are usually trained in one of the big commercial packages, so re-skilling for Blender would be an overhead. On a closely related note, bringing in new people on short notice would be made far more difficult by using less common software.
So yeah, the licensing may be cheaper Anyone who's worked in a medium to large business will immediately see the large costs associated with even one of the points above, let alone all of them at once. So to an established business it's cheaper to keep going with the big name packages than it is to change. Which in turn means that it's important for students to learn at least one of the big packages, because if you want to get paid for your work you'd best know the tools that can get you a job.
Consider that if it were relatively easy and profitable to create 3D DCC suites, we would be seeing a growing number of products appearing, to compete and take some of that money.
Blender plays a major role in this trend. As it becomes more capable, it will increasingly inflict economic damage on competitors higher on the market over time. Second, as users of other software slowly switch to Blender it will reduce the user-base of those other packages, which in turn will make those vendors have to hike their prices even more. This is now a vicious cycle. More and more users abandon it for Blender and other alternative packages.
If you seriously consider the overall trend here, I feel that Blender is the only 3D DCC suite that has very good prospects of long-term survival. I think that Lightwave, Modo, and Cinema 4D are on wobbly legs in order of wobbliest legs first. However, there are two factors that limit Blender from destroying more competitors for now: one, the GPL license which prevents tighter integration of commercial plugins. Two, the lack of a contractually-agreed, paid support option for it.
I think that those are the main factors that may keep some commercial alternatives viable indefinitely. Both factors could eventually be overcome though, so this is not guaranteed safety for the commercial competitors either. The result that it is advancing faster in several areas than Blender and in the case of the VFX tools, the BF has no chance of competing ever because of resource limits.
Maya will also surely be around for a long while yet, it is incredibly entrenched in the industry and unlike Blender, can have commercial plugins attached to it. Modo and C4D, it really depends on their development direction. Both apps. Modo users meanwhile are wondering why The Foundry continues to focus on specialized standalone apps.
Software development, support and marketing costs a ton of money.
